Why Become a Volunteer?

We were given research assignment on the benefits of volunteering. Since my childhood, my family has supported us volunteering for different causes- whether at family events, school events, volunteering to help out friends, family, etc. I have been brought up in a way that volunteering brings me happiness in a different way. This project has given me a way to explore the different other aspects of volunteering and it’s advantages. I have researched the health benefits of volunteering and included that in my project, which was assigned to all the English B students ( both HL and SL). This project has made me understand the benefits ( provided me with a factual perspective besides the existing underlying emotional aspect that I felt throughout my life).

I remember my first experience of volunteering as a kid. We had a community animal shelter in our neighborhood. I distinctly remember how happy I used to get to spend some “paw-some” time with my fur friends. I was a very shy kid but I never struggled to make good friends with animals. On an evening, I heard some of the elders discussing a fundraiser required to bring about necessary changes around and help the animals better. Later that night, my mom insisted and kind of forced me to volunteer and raise money with a lemonade stand- she even bribed me with ice cream. I was not happy at all but I could not say no to the ice cream. Little did I know that the next day would bring me a lifetime of love for volunteering. I had such a good time there! I met my best friend at the event and mom was so happy that she adopted our first dog, Leo, as well.

The story might be something really simple, not too elating probably but that was the day I understood the satisfaction in helping others- it made me feel invincible like I could do anything I want. I made friends, I got a new fur friend, and above all, it gave me the confidence to be around people from different backgrounds, gave me an opportunity to interact more, communicate and understand people and my surroundings better and no one can take that feeling away. I have learned so much by volunteering in such social events and helping support various causes that can help bring changes to our society.

When I look back, I think volunteering got me to help and bring improvements in our society and although small, I actually had some part in it. I really felt the boost in me. Hence, I decided to dedicate this blog based on my personal experience to help and encourage at least one person. You don’t only help the people and surroundings, you can also help yourself to be a better human being. When I researched the benefits of volunteering, I could see a lot that could go in my blog as a part of information but anyone can google the benefits, right?

Cooking Up a Storm with IBDP Students

The students of DP Year 1 and DP ear 2 got to experience several immersive cooking lessons throughout the past few weeks, as part of their CAS activities. Gaining notoriety for being a fan- favorite class amongst students, they have gained a lot of experience and knowledge by using hands-on approaches in cooking and preparing the ingredients. Mr. Asad has been a wonderful guide and taught as many skills as possible including how to use a knife, how to chop vegetables and similar skills. Students were encouraged to participate in cooking by ‘sharpening’ their knife skills, helping prepare the ingredients for assembly, and taking turns in stirring or frying various items on the portable electric stoves provided.  During the first class, the students got to partake in making ‘palak pakoda’, or more commonly known as spinach pakora. Each student had their own share in creating the batter, cutting the spinach stems (as well as dicing leafy, fresh toppings) and frying the crunchy snac...

MUN 101: Introducing the DP 1 Students to Model United Nations

With the new academic year beginning, the new DP 1 students were introduced to the idea of Model United Nation s  (MUN) for CAS on August the 13th. MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations, with students acting  as delegates, Secretary-Generals, committee staffs and committee chairs. MUN aims to educate young minds about  current global events, diplomacy, international relations and how the United Nations operates. Delegates need to  collaborate with other delegates to support each other's resolutions, sharing knowledge of their own ones and  listening to others proposals. Through MUNs, we as students can develop a multitude of skills, including:  presentation, public speaking, persuasion, research, critical thinking and situation analysis.    The sessions are taken by both Mr. Asad, our CAS supervisor, along with Mr. Mahfuz, a teacher here at  Australian International School who has experience in hosting MUNs in other educa...
