Exploring the 12 TOK Concepts: Group Presentation by IB DP Year 1

Presenting the 12 core concepts of Theory of Knowledge in class was both exciting and insightful. TOK is all about critical thinking and delving into the human nature of knowledge. The 12 TOK concepts push us to question how we know what we know. So, to understand these diverse concepts, we were asked to make a creative poster presenting these 12 concepts with examples. While preparing these presentations, we realized how interconnected each of these concepts are with each other. The 12 TOK concepts include, culture, certainty, evidence, explanation, interpretation, justification, objectivity, power, perspective, responsibility, truth, and lastly, values. In addition to discovering the meaning of these individual concepts, each group had to find relevant examples of them, as well as how they impact the formation of knowledge in our society as a whole. As a group, it was difficult at first to understand such abstract concepts and put them into words, but, through effective teamwork and ...

Learning TOK in a fun way!

TOK, also known as Theory of Knowledge, plays a special role in the IB Diploma Programme as it helps students reflect on the nature of knowledge and understand how they know what they know. Since the beginning of the new academic year, DP-1 students have started to take a look at the concepts and ideas of TOK. TOK has over 12 concepts which includes: Power, Culture, Responsibility, Truth, Perspective, Values, Objectivity, Justification, Evidence, Explanation, Interpretation and Certainty, along with 4 knowledge frameworks including Scope, Perspectives, Methods and Tools and last but not least, Ethics.    Recently, students of DP-1 have done a fun activity named “TOK Object Based Activity.” In a previous class, each student was given a card which had a specific TOK concept written on it and was told to explain it. In the following class, students were asked to bring an object which represented their given TOK concept. I must say, some of us had some very unique ideas...

TOK Exhibition

Theory of knowledge (TOK) plays a special role in the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Program (DP), by providing an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know. It is one of the components of the DP core and is mandatory for all students. The TOK requirement is central to the educational philosophy of the DP. The exhibition is an essential part of the TOK course, and it provides an opportunity for our students to showcase their understanding of TOK concepts. We believe that the exhibition will be an enriching experience for everyone in our community, and we encourage everyone to attend.

TOK Presentation

On 16th and 17th our TOK Facilitator, Mr. Sajid conducted a practice session for the upcoming TOK Exhibition in May. The TOK Exhibition is crucial in DP, especially in the first year. It contains one third of the overall TOK grade and TOK is a core component in IB. It is essential that students are well prepared for the exhibition.   For the practice session, we did not do the full run through of the exhibition. For this practice session we only had to pick one object for the prompt and theme, instead of three in the actual exhibition. We had to create a display for that one object and present it to the class and our DP Coordinator.   This has been incredibly helpful for the students, because it gives us an idea of what prompt and theme we will choose. We can see if we are comfortable with the object and are good at explaining the prompt or theme. The presentation also gave us a gist of how it will be like when we present our objects in front of a huge audie...
