IBDP Student's Interaction with Cybersecurity Expert

On Tuesday, November 15th, 2022. DP Y1 student Ariyaan Ahmed's father, Mr. Tanmay Ahmed visited the campus to conduct our first Parent - Student Workshop. Mr. Tanmay has been working as a specialist in the field of cybersecurity for years now. He is currently working for the Bangladesh government's cybersecurity division. During this interactive workshop, Mr. Tanmay discussed and interacted with the student's knowledge of Information Technologies and Global Societies (ITGS), a group 3 subject from our IB curriculum taught by Miss Irtifa Ali. Mr. Tanmay discussed why the knowledge of (ICT) or information communications technology is essential to understand in this developing era, where the advancements of technology are constantly changing the world we live in. With the many welfare technological advancements it brings, there are several downsides it brings, such as cybercrime. Mr. Tanmay discussed strategies our government is planning on implementing to fight against cybercrimes and is constantly updating the cybersecurity act of Bangladesh.

I believe this parent-student workshop had a very beneficial exposure to the students of IBDP and especially Miss Irtifa’s ITGS students. I believe more parents could step up to the occasion just like Mr. Tanmay has, as a major part of the learning we have in Ib is with analyzing real-world examples. I’d like to thank Mr. Tanmay Ahmed on behalf of everyone at the Australian International School, my respected peers and students, respected teachers, and respected coordinators.

Visit to EMK Center: A Hands-On Adventure in Technology and Innovation

Students from IB DP Year 2 and WACE 11 had an exciting and educational visit to the EMK Center, diving into the world of technology through interactive activities. The day began with a fun introduction to Makey Makey, where students turned everyday objects like paper and pencil into touchpads, blending creativity with basic electronics. They then engaged in a problem-solving session, learning the importance of asking the right questions before diving into solutions. Next, the students experienced the thrill of coding with a drone flying activity, where they controlled mini drones using tools similar to Scratch. Additionally, they got hands-on experience with SketchUp software, creating 3D models of houses, which helped them understand the basics of design and architecture. Learning TOK in a fun way!

TOK, also known as Theory of Knowledge, plays a special role in the IB Diploma Programme as it helps students reflect on the nature of knowledge and understand how they know what they know. Since the beginning of the new academic year, DP-1 students have started to take a look at the concepts and ideas of TOK. TOK has over 12 concepts which includes: Power, Culture, Responsibility, Truth, Perspective, Values, Objectivity, Justification, Evidence, Explanation, Interpretation and Certainty, along with 4 knowledge frameworks including Scope, Perspectives, Methods and Tools and last but not least, Ethics. Recently, students of DP-1 have done a fun activity named “TOK Object Based Activity.” In a previous class, each student was given a card which had a specific TOK concept written on it and was told to explain it. In the following class, students were asked to bring an object which represented their given TOK concept. I must say, some of us had some very unique ideas...
