We were given the topic of electronic cigarettes (also known as vaping) and whether or not they are bad for our health in our most recent TOK lesson. When a liquid is heated in an e-cigarette, it turns into vapors or, more precisely, aerosols that the user can inhale (thus "vaping"). These appliances heat chemicals like nicotine, marijuana, various flavorings, or other potentially hazardous compounds. Nicotine is habit-forming. While less dangerous than smoking, vaping is still not secure. You inhale an aerosol produced by heating nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavorings, and other compounds in e-cigarettes. There are 7,000 compounds in regular tobacco cigarettes, many of which are harmful.
There is obviously cause for concern given the unfortunate and distressing examples of serious lung illness. Other negative health impacts include several of the following:
Nicotine is highly addictive and can affect the developing brain, potentially harming teens and young adults. Even some "nicotine-free" e-cigarettes have been found to contain nicotine.
Some substances found in e-cigarette vapor have been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
Teens who vape are more likely to begin smoking cigarettes.
Explosions and burns have been reported with e-cigarettes while recharging the devices, due to defective batteries.
Accidental exposure to liquid from e-cigarettes has caused acute nicotine poisoning in children and adults.
Vaping during pregnancy could harm a developing fetus.
These serious lung disease cases among vapers raise critical issues regarding the safety of vaping. Perhaps it's not so surprising that vapers may experience lung issues: Our lungs were designed to only take in pure air. I could not find any proper sources or information on if vaping is good or bad for our health than smoking cigarettes, but I don't recommend anyone to vape because there are some studies that show how vaping is affecting the health of the younger generation and any kind of chemical intake is not good for our body.
