Heating things up: A day in the Chemistry Lab

As a hands-on subject concerned with the very makeup of the physical world , it's no surprise that lab experiments are an essential component of any chemistry course. These experiments allow students to observe chemical reactions firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of the principles and concepts they are learning in class.

Last week, IBDP Year 1 students gathered in the lab to investigate enthalpy changes and put their knowledge of thermochemistry to the test.

Students combined copper-sulfate and zinc to see their reactions with each other, to determine the enthalpy change of the reaction between copper-sulfate and zinc, and they used their observations to calculate the enthalpy change per mole of zinc. From starting to set up the experiment, making use of unfamiliar apparatus, and collecting data, the lab provided students the opportunity to practice collaboration and research in a fresh environment using a direct practical approach.

When the lab did not go as expected, students reflected on their findings and potential errors, inquiring into what may have gone “wrong” and how to present it in their next labs. Requiring students to develop problem-solving skills & fosters a deeper understanding of the scientific method.

This hands-on experience helped students understand the practical applications of thermochemistry and its importance in various fields of science.

Inspiring Minds: A Journey of Education, Life, and Gratitude

Education is not only restricted to textbooks and classrooms; it covers a larger knowledge of life, purpose, and the pursuit of achievement. Australian International School Dhaka, promotes complete growth while inspiring pupils to attain their best potential is of highest significance. In a recent engagement project, the school invited Dr. Shahpar Nahrir, a parent of IBDP 1 students Maryam and Amina Bushra, who discussed her life experiences, opinions on education, and important life advice. Dr. Nahrir, having a background in neurological surgery at Evercare Hospital, wants to teach students the significance of hard effort, persistence, and thankfulness in their path towards making a significant effect on society.  The Australian International School's dedication to offering a well-rounded education goes beyond academic differences. Recognizing the relevance of real-life experiences and ideas, the school regularly invites guest speakers to share their tales and viewpoints. Dr...

ESS Experiment on Soil

As the new term begins, so does a new experiment for ESS. These experiments are really fun for students as they can gain lab work experience and are beneficial because of the lab report that has to be done following it. For DP1, we are starting the chapter of Soil Systems and Society. Soil is a necessity on Earth and one of the roles is that it helps to grow plants. Our experiment was to analyze two samples of soils, garden soil and roadside soil. With these two samples we found its pH, moisture, water capacity and texture. It is important to understand these qualities in soil because when they are in a certain condition, it is the best for growing plants.   This experiment was very messy, but it was enjoyable. The students were divided into three groups and it was a new experience for everyone. Although we have done experiments before, we did not use some of the apparatus used in this experiment, so it was a new challenge for us. Equipment such as the dropper, glass rod...

Understanding the Role of Propaganda

A few days ago in English class we had a task of creating posters on propaganda. The aim was to understand the role of propaganda in spreading views and how it shapes people’s mindset.     What is propaganda? Propaganda is communication that is primarily used to influence or persuade an audience to further an agenda, which may or may not be objective and may include selectively presenting facts to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to elicit an emotional rather than a rational response to the information being presented.    International propaganda aims to influence global audiences' attitudes and ideas, modify their connection with their home governments, or offer an alternative view of their own and the world's conditions.   The novel we are studying in class, 1984 has a key theme which is propaganda. In the novel, the Party's main and most successful weapon is utilized to deceive, confuse, and contro...
