ESS Experiment on Soil

As the new term begins, so does a new experiment for ESS. These experiments are really fun for students as they can gain lab work experience and are beneficial because of the lab report that has to be done following it. For DP1, we are starting the chapter of Soil Systems and Society. Soil is a necessity on Earth and one of the roles is that it helps to grow plants. Our experiment was to analyze two samples of soils, garden soil and roadside soil. With these two samples we found its pH, moisture, water capacity and texture. It is important to understand these qualities in soil because when they are in a certain condition, it is the best for growing plants.   This experiment was very messy, but it was enjoyable. The students were divided into three groups and it was a new experience for everyone. Although we have done experiments before, we did not use some of the apparatus used in this experiment, so it was a new challenge for us. Equipment such as the dropper, glass rods and the

Understanding the Role of Propaganda

A few days ago in English class we had a task of creating posters on propaganda. The aim was to understand the role of propaganda in spreading views and how it shapes people’s mindset.     What is propaganda? Propaganda is communication that is primarily used to influence or persuade an audience to further an agenda, which may or may not be objective and may include selectively presenting facts to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to elicit an emotional rather than a rational response to the information being presented.    International propaganda aims to influence global audiences' attitudes and ideas, modify their connection with their home governments, or offer an alternative view of their own and the world's conditions.   The novel we are studying in class, 1984 has a key theme which is propaganda. In the novel, the Party's main and most successful weapon is utilized to deceive, confuse, and control its citizens, as wel

Exploring Movie Reviews with English A Lang. & Lit. and French ab initio

On 19 January 2023, students of English A Language and Literature and French ab initio had the opportunity to experience a collaborative class with Miss Maria Anam Khan (English A facilitator) and Irtifa Ali(French ab initio facilitator). The goal of this lesson was to transfer the structure, format and conventions based knowledge explored earlier in French class to draft a mind map of the movie 1984 (that we have seen in English A class). This group 1 collaboration offered a fantastic opportunity of experiential learning and broadening the understanding of how language works as a powerful tool to communicate ideas and thoughts in various platforms.    Students were divided in two groups and they first reflected on the conceptual understanding of the purpose of the movie 1984. Then they researched appropriate French vocabulary and phrases which they must use to convey about the genre, director, release date, artists’ performances, the plot, the cinematography and positives and nega

Group 4 Project by IBDP Year 2 Students

Recently, the class of IBDP Year 2 has showcased a presentation on IB mandatory criteria called Group 4 project. Group 4 project is a collaborative work carried out by the students of science subjects which include physics, chemistry, biology, and ESS.    The goal of the group 4 project is to solve a specific problem involving all scientific criteria. We, the class of 2023, decided to address a problem involving the school cafeteria. The objective of the project was to improve food, nutrition, and energy system of the cafeteria. The topic was selected after we discovered that our school’s food systems are inefficient or do not produce their best results. As a result, we analyzed various solution for the issue to be resolved.   During, the planning process we experienced major setbacks due to lack of understanding on the overall concept of group 4 project. We couldn’t decide the agendas appropriately to the group 4 criteria. Despite the setbacks, we continued our journey through t

Exploring Bivariate Statistics

On 15th January, we had a collaborative class between Math Applications and Interpretations (AI) and Math Analysis and Approaches. In this class, both SL and HL classes were involved.    For our work we were split into groups of four, we had to make a poster on Bivariate statistics. We had to measure the height and weight of every student in the class and see if their height affects their weight or vice versa and. In our poster we drew a table of all the weight and height of the students and we also drew a scatter plot using the data and in conclusion for our poster we found out that in majority cases the weight does affect the height and vice versa but in some cases due to genetics or eating habits this theory could be excused.     This team work helped to deepen our understanding of collecting data and using data to derive conclusions or to identify similarities or differences. We also understood the core components of Math Applications and Interpretations (AI) and Math Analysis and

Ijtema’s Effect on the School and Environment

Beginning on the 12th January and recurring in some days till the 26th of January, there is a huge festival in The River Turag called Ijtema. We were not aware of the festival and its audience, so on the 12th many students could not reach school due to severe traffic. Attendance was incredibly low that day with many students arriving very late. This later resulted in the school also being closed the following Sunday.   Global Warming is one of the most serious issues in the world right now and one of the main causes is fossil fuel emissions, which can be from vehicle exhaust. As an ESS student, it is worrying to see how much carbon dioxide is emitted to the atmosphere with the excess traffic. The amount of pollution added to an already polluted Dhaka will be catastrophic long term. What is worse is that the event will also happen for another few days. The amount of pollution is horrible for the environment and may result in more school days declared as holidays due to the traffic
